December 2009 Tel Dor (Dora)
The ancient Phoenician port city is located on a mound on the Carmel coast, and was one of the greatest cities along the northern shore.
Joshua 12 23: “The king of Dor in the coast of Dor”.
November 2009 Tiberias – South gate
The southern gate and walls of the Roman city include towers, walls, drainage channel, bridge and a paved street. It was recently reconstructed and included in the new exciting Tiberias Archaeological park.
Wars III 9 8: “Vespasian… went to the city; upon which the citizens opened to him their gates”
October 2009 Hippos (Sussita)
The ruins of an ancient city located on a horse-shaped mountain on the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee. This Greco-Roman and Byzantine site is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in the Galilee.
September 2009 Masada
The last and most important fortress of the great Jewish rebellion against Rome, and one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Israel.
“Masada shall not fall again.”
August 2009 Hilazon creek
The Hilazon (Chilazon – snail) creek flows south of the Beit-Kerem valley, from the Sachnin valley to the plains of Acre. Along this nature reserve are a number of ancient sites, starting from the prehistoric periods.
July 2009 Karmi’el (Overview)
One of the prettiest cities in Israel, located in the heart of the valley of Beit-Kerem. During Byzantine period this was a center of many Christian monasteries.
June 2009 Tell Afek (in the Galilee)
Tell Afek is a Biblical city on the ancient Via Maris road, south to Acre; its springs are the sources of the Na’aman river.
Joshua 19: 24, 30: “And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher… Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob”
May 2009 “Last supper” – Coenaculum
This place, on Mount Zion, is the traditional site of the the location of the Last Supper (“Coenaculum”). The present day hall is a 12th century Crusader structure, built on top of King David’s tomb.
Mark 15 15: “where I shall eat the Passover with my disciples? And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared”
April 2009 Beit Shean – Scythopolis
Beit Shean was a major Biblical city. The Hellenistic city, Scythopolis, was established near its ruins and became a major city until its destruction in the 8th century.
1 Kings 4 7-12: “And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel… Baana the son of Ahilud; to him pertained … all Bethshean, which is by Zartanah beneath Jezreel”
March 2009 Emmaus – Overview
Emmaus, also known as Hammat or Nicopolis, was a large city from the Hellenistic period through the Byzantine period. It is strategically located on the main road from the plains to Jerusalem.
Luke 24 13: “And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs”.
February 2009 Khirbet Mehoz
Remains of a Byzantine village in the central upper Galilee. A recommended site for a short hike in the spring time, which can also include the nearby sites of Khirbet Heshek and Tefen.
Psalms 107 30:”Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven”
January 2009 Ein Karem (Overview)
The village of Ein Karem, on the west side of Jerusalem, is according to tradition the birthplace of John the Baptist.
