Dec 2013 Shiloah (Siloam) pool

       Remains of the ritual pool of Shiloah, dated to the second temple period.

John 9 11:  “Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash”.

Nov 2013 Gihon Spring

    The main source of water in Jerusalem during the Canaanite and Israelite Kingdom periods. Around the spring are tunnels, fortifications and pools that were constructed to better utilize and protect the water supply.

   

     (2 Chron. 32 30): “Hezekiah also stopped the upper watercourse of Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David”.

Oct 2013 Tel Yavne (Yamnia)

    A famous ancient city, located near the crossing of the ancient trade route over the Sorek stream.

(Joshua 15:11): “And the border went out … unto Jabneel; and the goings out of the border were at the sea”.

Sep 2013 Tel Lachish

  The second most important fortified city in the kingdom of Judea, guarding a main road from Egypt to Jerusalem.

   2 Chron. 32 9:  “Sennacherib … laid siege against Lachish”.

Aug 2013 Sodom Caves

 The caves of the Salt mountain of Sodom (Sedom), on the west shore of the Dead Sea.

   (Genesis 19 26): “But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.”.

July 2013 Nahal Bokek

   A brook which flows into the south-western side of the Dead Sea. Ruins of a Roman/Byzantine fortress are located on its outlet, close to the resort area of Ein Bokek.

Isaiah 24 1: “Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty”…

June 2013 Zohar Brook (Nahal Zohar)

   The brook served as an important route to and from the Dead Sea. Ancient fortresses were constructed  in the valley.

  May 2013 Lost City

     Ruins of an ancient farming settlement, dated to the late Byzantine and Early Arab periods, located near Kibbutz Sde-Boker.

Apr 2013 Horkania (Hyrcania)

     A 2nd century BC Hasmonean desert fortress in the northern Judean desert. It was reinforced by King Herod the Great. During the Byzantine period a Monastery was built by the Judean monks.

Mar 2013  Mt. Karkom

   A holy mountain in the Negev desert, possibly the location of Mount Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments.

  Exodus 31 18:  “And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God”.

Feb 2013 Samaria (City)

      Shomron (Samaria) was the capital city of the Northern Kingdom, and important Hellenistic and Roman city.

 

1 Kings 16 23-24: “Omri … bought the hill Samaria of Shemer for two talents of silver, and built on the hill, and called the name of the city which he built…  Samaria”.

Jan 2013 Elon Moreh

    Elon Moreh is an Israeli settlement in Samaria, located on Mount Kabir, east of Shechem.

Genesis 12 6: “And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.”.
